Experience on battery selection of headlamp

”"

It has been 20 years since I went outdoors in 1998 and bought the first vaude70 liter mountaineering bag. In these 20 years, I have used more than 100 kinds of headlamp torches. From purchasing finished products to self-assembly, I have various requirements. Finally, I only keep more than a dozen headlamp torches. Now I just talk about my experience on battery selection.
Headlights have different selection requirements for batteries according to the service environment.
For example, just walking or running on urban and rural roads, the use time is not long, and the ambient temperature will not be too low. Since the battery can be purchased and replaced at any time, AAA, AA and alkaline carbon batteries can be used. Because it is not a harsh environment, the battery can be replaced and recharged at any time. In pursuit of lightness, many people choose 3AAA headlights.

In winter, low-temperature batteries can choose lithium batteries or nickel metal hydride batteries. Among them, low-temperature Ni MH battery can be used at minus 40 degrees! However, the capacity of low-temperature Ni MH battery is relatively low.
If you need to take the mountain road, 100-200 lumens is basic. Otherwise, it is difficult to see the road surface clearly. The jungle road surface, especially the road surface with more rotten leaves and a little wet, I often use 350-400 lumens for lighting, and even use about 600 lumens for complex and difficult to walk. Otherwise, using about 150 lumens for lighting will always step into the mud.

Due to the lighting demand, in order to ensure the lighting power, there are requirements for the headlamp battery. Therefore, in order to ensure the lighting demand, it is recommended to use 3AA or 4AA to provide enough demand. As for 3AAA, it is OK to burst 200 lumens in a short time, and the continuous lighting time of 200 lumens in half an hour can not be provided, and the brightness will drop sharply. After all, the battery capacity determines.

In terms of low-temperature power retention performance, alkaline batteries are completely failed, nickel hydrogen batteries are basically the same as lithium batteries, and the capacity of – 30 degrees is less than 50%.

If it is difficult to obtain lighting power outdoors for a long time, it is recommended to use 18650 lithium battery powered headlamp flashlight.
